WINDHOEK, Jan. 18 — Namibia’s largest export commodity during November 2022 was diamonds, accounting for 30.3 percent of the total exports, according to figures released Wednesday by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).
Most of the diamonds are destined for Botswana, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong, the agency said.
Uranium and non-monetary gold came second and third on the list, accounting for 17.5 percent and 8.8 percent of the total exports, respectively.
“Uranium was mainly destined to China and France, while non-monetary gold was destined to South Africa,” the latest NSA trade statistics showed.
According to the NSA, fish export came to the fourth position, accounting for 5.3 percent of the total exports, mostly destined for Spain and Zambia, while copper ores and concentrates took the fifth position with a share of 5.1 percent of the total exports and were mostly destined for Belgium.
The top five export commodities jointly accounted for 67 percent of the total exports.
Meanwhile, the southwestern African nation’s trade activities continued to increase from January to November in 2022 when compared to the same period in 2021.
Cumulative exports in the first 11 months of 2022 stood at 87 billion Namibia dollars (about 5.14 billion U.S. dollars), representing an increase of 46.1 percent from 59.6 billion Namibia dollars recorded during the same period in 2021.
In terms of imports, the NSA said South Africa remained Namibia’s largest source of imports with a share of 45.6 percent of the value of all goods received into the country in November 2022. China came to second place with a contribution of 9.2 percent of the total imports. (Xinhua)
