LAGOS, Aug. 5 — Nigerian troops had neutralized 20 bandits and freed their captives in northwest state of Zamfara, a military officer said Saturday.
The combatant troops ambushed along bandits’identified routes where 20 bandits were neutralized, Col. Muhammad Dole, the military information officer said in a statement reaching Xinhua.
Some bandits escaped with gunshot wounds and several motorcycles were burnt, he added, noting that two notorious bandits, Bello Danboko and Sani Maza, were eliminated in Yanwari ward near Yankuzo and Mai Tukunya village near Dansadau all in Zamfara.
He said some weapons, ammunitions, motorcycles, phones and large herds of cows were recovered.
Last week, the Nigerian government assembled a 1,000-strong military force, comprising the army, air force, police and the civil defense to launch fierce attacks on the bandits terrorizing villages and towns of Zamfara State.
Bandits suspected to be cattle rustlers have killed hundreds of people in villages across the state. Several villages have also been razed by the attackers who also kidnap for ransom.
