WINDHOEK, 16 AUG – The ‘Children of the Liberation Struggle’ camping at the Ndilimani farm at Brakwater have asked Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) President McHenry Venaani for help, saying Swapo has failed them.
The group’s leader Gabriel Hendrick and three other group members during a meeting with the PDM leader here on Thursday said they are “supposed to be Swapo’s responsibility” but the ruling party has failed them.
“Swapo has done nothing for us and we are still here with nothing, even after they promised to take care of us on behalf of our parents,” Hendrick said.
The group asked Venaani to convey the message to President Hage Geingob so they can get jobs and be rid of the poverty they live in.
Close to 194 ‘struggle kids’ have been living at Brakwater since 2016, when they were relocated from the Swapo party headquarters in Windhoek.
They also said some of them have received training after an agreement with the Office of the Prime Minister, but claimed that the training was of little use.
“So far, of the few of us who have received training, none of us are employed or able to get employment,” Hendrick said.
They further complained of hunger and unbearable living conditions, saying they sometimes go up to three days without food.
“This forces us to resort to immoral activities such as grabbing other people’s food and causing unnecessary commotion.”
Hendrick said some group members have died during their protests held to get the government’s attention.
Venaani acknowledged the group’s complaints and said he would take it up with the Office of the Prime Minister.
“I am definitely going to give this my attention as I am on a mission to give particular preference to the youth and end their suffering,” he said.
He added that he will visit the camp in order to assess the situation himself.
