Government offers N$ 562 million in income grants.

Windhoek, April 01 – Government will provide an Emergency Income Grant to support workers who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its fallout. According to the Press Statement from the Minister of Finance, Namibian citizens between the ages of 18 and 60 years who worked in informal and formal sector will be provided with a once-off payment of N$ 750 to stave off the vulnerabilities which arise during the lockdown. Payment will be made in collaboration with Social Security Commission and other financial institutions to citizens who lost their jobs and who are not receiving any social grants from government.

Accordingly a ta-back loan scheme will also be provided for the registered tax paying employees and self-employed individual persons who have lost their incomes or experiencing difficulties due to COVID-19 outbreak.
Additionally, government has vowed to provide water subsidy in the amount of N$ 10 million through NamPower and local authorities during lockdown. This is to ensure that water points are kept open without water cards during the 21 day lockdown.
The minister called on the business community and employers to avoid laying off employees.
