WINDHOEK, 21 AUG – Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming will leave Namibia next week to welcome Namibian President, Hage Geingob on arrival in Beijing for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit.
Zhang announced this during a media conference here on Tuesday.
The summit will take place from 03-04 September in the Chinese capital.
This will be Geingob’s second visit to China this year and it is expected to cement the bilateral relations between Namibia and China, the ambassador explained.
The Namibian Head of State is scheduled to arrive in China on 01 September.
Geingob, who is the new Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairperson, is set to deliver a speech on behalf of SADC on 03 September during the summit.
A total of 40 African country leaders have reportedly confirmed attendance to the FOCAC Beijing Summit, which according to the Chinese ambassador is a sign that Africa attaches high importance to the event.
“FOCAC is an important platform of collective dialogue for China and African countries and it is also the largest and most fruitful South-South cooperation platform,” Zhang explained.
The FOCAC summit intends “to strengthen the strategic consensus between the two sides to maintain their friendship, consolidate the political foundation for their unity and cooperation and inject a strong impetus into the development of the bilateral ties in the new era”.
The event will also chart the course for developing future relations and build a stronger community of shared future between China and African countries while achieving win-win cooperation and common development.
The Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development on Sunday issued a statement saying Geingob’s trip to China will be preceded by a visit to Indonesia from 27 to 31 August.
“During these missions, Namibian companies will have an opportunity to participate in a series of business events that range from a business forum and business-to-business meetings to company visits and an entrepreneurship conference,” the statement noted.
About 800 leading entrepreneurs around the world are expected to attend the gathering, which according to Zhang, provides a new momentum for business opportunities.
