RUNDU, 24 JUN – The town of Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region has been chosen as the host venue for the commemoration of this year’s Heroes’ Day, Kavango West Regional Governor, Sirkka Ausiku has said.
“We received a letter from Secretary to Cabinet, George Simataa informing us that President Hage Geingob directed that the 2018 Heroes’ Day commemoration should take place in the Kavango West Region in Nkurenkuru on 22 August,” said Ausiku in an interview with Nampa on Friday.
She said since the commemoration is a national event, there is already a national preparatory committee, which will work hand-in-hand with a regional committee to be chaired by Ausiku and deputised by Kavango West Regional Council chairperson, Joseph Sivaku.
Ausiku thanked the president for choosing her region to host the event, saying that she feels honoured for her region to be accorded the opportunity to host such an important event, even though the region is still new and does not have the necessary infrastructure in place.
“I am appealing to all residents of our region to be ready and to welcome our visitors and give them our warm hospitality,” she said.
“To the rest of Namibia, we are inviting them to come to our region to join the residents here in paying homage and honour to the heroes and heroines of our country,” said Ausiku.
She noted that while the day is usually commemorated on 26 August annually, it will be commemorated on 22 August this year as the former date falls on a Sunday.
