WINDHOEK, 25 APR – Lost Day Injuries (LDIs) in the mining industry increased from 47 in 2016 to 48 in 2017.
Two fatalities were also recorded last year, Chamber of Mines of Namibia President Johan Coetzee said while delivering a report for 2017 presented during the chamber’s Annual General Meeting here on Tuesday.
LDIs are occupational injuries that result in one or more days away from work.
Coetzee further noted that the number of disabling injuries at mines rose significantly, from 78 in 2016 to 85 in 2017.
“Despite these tragic events however, the mining industry continues to strive towards the objective of ‘zero harm’ through a self-governing system which is pioneered through a Safety Peer Review mission by the Chamber Safety Committee,” he said.
Coetzee, on behalf of the chamber, expressed condolences to the families and friends of deceased employees.
He said the chamber continues to learn from such experiences to ensure that similar accidents are avoided in the future.
