OKAKARARA, 15 AUG – A man accused to have hit a police officer of the Namibian Police (NamPol) on duty with a bottle on Saturday night, appeared in the Okakarara Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Nico Tjirondero faces a charge of assaulting a police officer while executing his duties.
The accused allegedly hit Sergeant Ferdinand Muharukua with a bottle on his head while he was on duty at a bar in Okakarara.
Tjirondoro, who appeared before Assistant Magistrate Imelda Mujoro, pleaded not guilty to the charge and opted to apply for a State-funded lawyer through the Ministry of Justice’s Legal Aid Directorate.
Mujoro then postponed the case to 27 September 2018 to allow the accused to apply for Legal Aid and for further police investigations.
Public prosecutor Johannes Inongelwa represented the State in the matter.
Thirty eight other residents were also arrested on Saturday night after a serious scuffle broke out between them and the police at the Okakarara Police Station.
The residents wanted the bars to continue to operate.
The 38 were arrested on charges of breach of peace, riotous behaviour, assaulting and/or obstructing police officers to execute their duties as well as inciting people to commit a crime.
A media release issued by the Inspector General of NamPol, Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunga on Monday said the 38 people were released from Police custody as through preliminary investigations they could not be directly linked to the charges.
A full scale investigation is underway and the would-be culprits would face the full wrath of the law, it added.
