YEREVAN, Aug. 13 — Armenia’s Court of Appeal ordered the release of former President Robert Kocharyan who was taken into custody on July 27 for “overthrow of constitutional order” ten years ago, state media reported on Monday.
The charges against Kocharyan were brought by the Special Investigative Service (SIS) alleging the former president was not allowed by the constitution to use the military during the 20-day state of emergency that was declared following 10 days of protests amid the presidential elections that saw Kocharyan’s ally Serzh Sargsyan come to power.
It now remains unclear if the authorities will challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal. The Court of Cassation of Armenia will be the last to rule on the matter.
Kocharyan served as president of Armenia from 1998 until 2008. His longtime ally Serzh Sargsyan succeeded him but was forced to step down on April 23 this year following weeks of nationwide protests. – XINHUA
