EU supports inter-cultural activities

WINDHOEK, 10 MAY  – The European Union (EU) has expressed support for countries and continents to engage in inter-cultural activities as it helps shape identities and everyday lives, while contributing to cultural knowledge.
These were the remarks of EU Delegation to Namibia Ambassador, Jana Hybášková during Europe Day celebrations in the capital on Wednesday.
Hybášková said that it is in this respect that the EU actively supports the development and preservation of Namibia’s cultural heritage through projects such as ‘Museum Development as a tool for strengthening cultural rights in Namibia’.
“This year, the EU also celebrates the European Year of Cultural Heritage and the aim is to encourage more people to discover and engage with Europe’s cultural heritage,” she added.
In addition to the support offered by the EU, an indigenous language research project at the Department of Communication of the Namibia University of Science and Technology has also received funding of about N.dollars 3.5 billion to kick off.
“The purpose of this initiative is the revitalisation of indigenous languages and to preserve culture.”
The project will focus on the Oshiwambo, Otjiherero and Khoekhoegowab languages.
Meanwhile, the first-ever European Music Festival in Namibia will be held in Windhoek on 26 May this year with musicians from France, Germany and Spain performing.
