Oshakati, July 5. – Oshakati Town Council has announced the implementation of the newly established Cemetery Regulation, effective from 1st July 2023. The regulation, approved by the council under section 94 of the Local Authorities Act, 1992 (Act No. 23 of 1992), and in consultation with the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, aims to govern and manage all cemeteries within the jurisdiction of Oshakati.
According to Ms. Katarina Kamari, the Corporation Communication Officer, individuals found guilty of violating the Cemetery Regulation may face a fine of up to N$ 5000 or imprisonment for a maximum period of twelve months, or both.
Under this new regulation, all cemeteries within Oshakati’s boundaries are now the property of the council, who will oversee their management. The Cemetery Regulation covers various aspects, including the control of burials and cemeteries, grave allocation, funeral procedures, exhumation protocols, grave maintenance, erection and upkeep of memorial structures, cremation guidelines, and other general provisions.
For any burials within the jurisdiction of Oshakati Town, residents are required to consult and inform the council through their respective churches. Different fee categories will apply for the use of cemeteries, with the amounts subject to annual changes.
