WINDHOEK, 27 Apr – The Swapo Party, through Secretary General (SG), Sophia Shaningwa on Friday congratulated Founding President, Sam Nujoma for receiving the Order of Supreme Companion of OR Tambo in gold award from the South African government.
The party explained in a media statement that Nujoma was at the helm of the struggle from the beginning of the political struggle and self-determination by the Namibian people.
“He never wavered but continued to soldier on until Namibia was politically free,” the statement said.
“During the bitter and protracted years of the struggle, he also worked with sister political organisations with a similar mission such as the ANC, MPLA, Frelimo, ZANU PF and others across the African continent,” said the statement, referring to the ruling political parties of South Africa, Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The Supreme Companion of OR Tambo falls in the gold class and is awarded to those who have actively promoted the interests and aspirations of South Africa through excellent cooperation and active expression of solidarity and support.
The Swapo Party said it also considers Nujoma as a champion of peace, stability and economic emancipation and therefore described the award as befitting his stature and immense contributions.
The ruling party expressed gratitude to the African National Congress and the South African government at large, for the recognition of the contributions of the Namibian liberation icon to the African continent.
