WINDHOEK, 23 JUL – Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary, Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax is expected to pay a courtesy call on President Hage Geingob on Monday afternoon at State House.
A media statement by the Presidency on Monday confirmed Tax’s visit to State House.
Geingob is the current Deputy Chairperson of SADC and will next month assume the chairmanship of the regional economic community when Namibia hosts the 38th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government on 17 and 18 August.
Namibia is the home of the SADC treaty, having hosted the historic summit of 1992, transforming the then Southern African Development Coordination Conference into present day SADC.
The country has not hosted a SADC Summit ever since, although in 2014 President Hifikepunye Pohamba chaired the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The statement quotes Geingob as saying the summit will promote and consolidate shared economic interests and common political values.
“Without peace and stability in the region, economic growth and development will remain elusive,” he said.
Namibia is convening the SADC Summit under the theme ‘Promoting Infrastructure Development and Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development’.
