OSHIKOTO, DECEMBER 15 — A total of 36,976 individuals in the Oshikoto Region underwent HIV testing between January 1 and October 31 of this year, with 449 cases confirmed as HIV positive. This data was shared by health expert Saara Uushona during the World AIDS Day commemoration held earlier this week.
Uushona emphasized the importance of linking those who test positive to antiretroviral therapy (ART), noting that 436 out of the 449 identified individuals have already been successfully connected to treatment.
Despite this progress, Uushona identified several challenges faced by individuals living with HIV, such as stigma, side effects from medication, and difficulties with adhering to treatment plans. She stressed the need for continued support, urging both health workers and the broader community to be more proactive.
To address these challenges, Uushona recommended several measures, including enhancing patient education and counseling, providing reminders for medication adherence, conducting community awareness campaigns, and promoting the establishment of peer support groups within local communities.
“Overcoming these challenges requires a collective effort,” Uushona stated, urging the public to join forces in reducing stigma and improving adherence to treatment regimens.- Namibia Daily News
