WINDHOEK, NOVEMBER 15– Social activist Michael Amushelelo is among more than 300,000 individuals whose personal government records were compromised in a major cyberattack on Telecom Namibia.
The breach exposed sensitive documents, including passports and ID cards, of government ministers, Cabinet members, and ordinary citizens. Notable figures affected include NBC Board Chairperson Lazarus Jacobs, Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) CEO Nangula Uaandja, and Amushelelo himself.
The leaked information has since spread across social media, raising alarm over the security of national data systems.
Audrin Mathe, Executive Director in the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, addressed the issue, emphasizing the role of the Office of the Prime Minister in tackling cybersecurity challenges.
“The Office of the Prime Minister is responsible for addressing matters of cybersecurity,” Mathe stated.
As of now, the Namibian Police have not confirmed whether Telecom Namibia has officially reported the breach to its Cyber Crime Unit. — Namibia Daily News
