//Kharas Region gears up for national clean-up campaign

KEETMANSHOOP, 22 APR – Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency Councillor Hilma Nicanor has called on inhabitants of the //Kharas Region to support the national clean-up campaign on 25 May.
Nicanor made this call at the belated independence celebrations of the Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency here on Saturday.
The councillor said towns and settlements are becoming unhygienic due to waste and the carelessness of some residents.

“Living in unclean environments leads to bad conditions and breakouts of diseases in our communities. Keeping our environments clean and neat is our responsibility, so let us stand up and clean our country,” she said.

The office of the //Kharas Governor held a meeting on Friday with local authority and regional councillors and various stakeholders to inform them of what is needed for the clean-up campaign in terms of cleaning materials.

All local authority and councillors present at the meeting said they are ready for the day as they have all the necessary equipment.
They are however worried that people will not show up as it is a holiday. They also wanted to know where the rubbish collected will be disposed of.
The governor said she will find out where the rubbish is to be disposed of and will call a meeting to address the issue on 11 May.
Speaking at the meeting, Keetmanshoop State Hospital Chief Medical Officer Doctor Rudolf Kooper said the local authority and councillors must educate the on some of the dangers they might face during the clean-up.

“Inform them of things like the danger of being bitten by a snake or even by a tick, tell them what the precautions are that they should take,” Kooper said.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services has said it will provide masks, boots and gloves for the whole //Kharas Region.
