WINDHOEK, 21 JUL – Hundreds of mourners arrived at the Heroes’ Acre early on Saturday morning to pay their last respect to the late Theo-Ben Gurirab.
According to a programme received at the State funeral, former Namibian heads of state and the current president, Dr Hage Geingob, are expected to arrive by 09h00 before the casket is placed in front of the Eternal Flame for proceedings to commence.
Geingob is expected to deliver a message before the casket is taken to the grave site and lowered to a 21-gun salute in honour of Gurirab’s contribution to the liberation struggle.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Minister Agriculture, Water and Forestry Alpheus !Naruseb are to lead the proceedings.
Gurirab died on 14 July at the age of 80.
Gurirab served as Swapo’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs from 1986 to 1990 and played a major role in the country’s liberation struggle.
He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from Namibia’s independence in 1990 until 2002, when he started serving as Prime Minister.
Gurirab served in this position until 2005 and was then Speaker of the National Assembly until 2015.
He also served as Swapo’s Chief Representative to the United Nations for 14 years.
