Swakopmund, Aug. 9 – Five suspected robbers including a taxi driver were arrested on Monday after they allegedly robbed an employee of Woerman Brock Hardware of cash in front of Spar Supermarket in Tobias Hainyeko Street, at Swakopmund around 09h27 yesterday.
It is alleged the victim had been sent by his manager to deposit N$1 900 at a local bank and while he was cycling to the bank, he was approached by a group of men who threatened him with knives.
The robbers allegedly cut off the man’s backpack which contained the money and ran to a waiting taxi which had its registration number plates covered.
According to the Erongo Police, the taxi sped off in the direction of Walvis Bay with all the suspects.
The victim immediately notified the police and with the assistance of members of the Swakopmund Neighbourhood watch group, the police identified the vehicle and suspects through the CCTV footage.
Police arrested two suspects at Yianni Savva Police station and the other three were arrested in the dunes.
The stolen N$1 900 was also recovered.
The five suspects are expected to appear at Swakopmund Magistrate court tomorrow (Wednesday).
“We warn would-be criminals that with public support on our side, we are motivated even more and we will deal with them in terms of the law,” said a police statement.
“It is clear that taxis and taxi drivers are being used to transport criminals as well as stolen property. It should be clear to both taxi drivers and owners that we will arrest the drivers, impound the vehicles and investigate the owner.”
