YAOUNDE, Jan. 24 -- Cameroon's Ministry of Social Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have launched a program to combat human trafficking and smuggling in indigenous communities of the country. The program will evaluate cases of human trafficking and smuggling for two years and provide officials with statistics to help put the situation under control, officials said during the launch in the capital, Yaounde, on Thursday. The program will seek to raise awareness of the issue, especially in rural areas, where people are know little about of the danger of human trafficking, a senior official of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Henri Nyambi III Dikosso, told reporters. "People from rural areas continue to send their children to stay with relatives living in urban areas with assurance that the children will go to school and when they are already in town, generally they are used as house helps," Dikosso said. According to the IOM, Cameroon is a source, transit, and destination country for women and children subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking and a source country for men in forced labor. On Monday, Cameroon National Gendarmerie said it has busted a child trafficking ring that had been selling children from the country's South region to buyers in neighboring Equatorial Guinea. Xinhau
