2018 Skorpion Zinc Under-17 Cup launched

WINDHOEK, 03 JUL  – Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Erastus Uutoni officially launched the 2018 Skorpion Zinc Under-17 Cup in Windhoek on Tuesday.
This is the fifth edition of the competition and it will take place at Grootfontein from 24 to 27 August 2018.
Uutoni said youth football competitions are important as they enhance the involvement of talented youngsters in sports by opening up new opportunities for the youngsters.
“This competition is very strategic as it is not only about promoting the game of football and a healthy lifestyle for our people, but it is also a catalyst for social unity,” he said.
The minister added that he recently visited the Kavango East Region where he discussed with stakeholders the issue of companies’ social responsibility.
“The concern is that only a handful of companies contribute to sport development, while many others do not bother despite making huge profits from our communities. We know them and we should encourage them to help develop sports,” he said.
Uutoni said Namibians must commend and appreciate efforts by companies like Skorpion Zinc that ensure that young people play the game they love and develop their talent for the benefit of the country.
“As a sponsor, you understand that sporting activities have major social, political and economic significance in our society. We fully acknowledge your past contributions in sponsorships and thank you in anticipation of your future commitments,” Uutoni said.
Speaking at the same occasion, Skorpion Zinc General Manager Irvine Simataa revealed that N.dollars 1.4 million has been allocated for the 2018 edition of the championship.
“We are proud of what we have done here as initially, our aim was to give back to our young and most vulnerable of our society, especially the future of this country. It was demonstrated very well in 2016 when our Baby Warriors won the Cosafa Cup in Mauritius,” he said.
