WINDHOEK, 03 JUL – The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has confirmed 73 suspected Hepatitis E cases in the Erongo Region, with six testing positive.
MoHSS acting Permanent Secretary, Petronella Masabane made the confirmation in an interview with Nampa on Tuesday.
“These cases were confirmed in the laboratory this morning,” Masabane said.
Earlier this year, Windhoek also experienced cases of Hepatitis E linked to unhygienic environmental settings and a lack of proper sanitation for many residents in the city’s increasing informal settlements.
Ten cases of Hepatitis E were also confirmed in the Omusati Region last month, while an unconfirmed number of people are still under observation after showing symptoms of the disease.
The cases of Hepatitis E in Omusati were confirmed at the Tsandi District Hospital, located near the Uukwaluudhi Royal Homestead.
Outapi State Hospital had also recorded a few cases.
People with limited access to safe drinking water, pregnant women and immuno-compromised individuals are reportedly at high risk of contracting the virus, while symptoms include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and jaundice.
The acting PS urged people to remain calm and maintain hygienic conditions and environments.
