WINDHOEK, 12 APR – Sport has the potential to contribute to Namibia’s socio-economic development, President Hage Geingob said on Wednesday.
He was speaking during his fourth State of the Nation Address in the National Assembly.
Geingob called on all Namibian youth to take full advantage of opportunities availed to them, including in sport.
“Effective governance as espoused in the Harambee Prosperity Plan aims to strengthen governance across all sectors, including institutions governing sport,” the president said.
He added that government’s efforts will not be meaningful without the commitment of the youth.
Geingob said in 2018, sport codes such as football, indoor hockey, para-athletics and boxing demonstrated the role of sport in fostering a spirit of patriotism.
His pronouncements come after the budget for the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service was cut by more than N.dollars 96 million in the 2018/19 National Budget.
The ministry was allocated N.dollars 288 287 000 for the three directorates – sport, youth, and national service.
