Serial rapist Rooinasie sent to jail for 60 years

WINDHOEK, 18 JUN  – A Windhoek resident who had raped several young women in a bushy area near the Katutura State Hospital and Okahandja road hiking area, was sent to jail for 60 years.
Jan Rooinasie, 37, was on Monday sentenced in connection with the rape of a 13-year-old girl on 25 May 2007 and the repeated rape of three other women – aged 20 to 24 – between 02 and 22 March 2010.
High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka passed the jail term following Rooinasie’s conviction on eight counts of rape, four counts of attempted murder, two counts of indecent assault and a count of crimen injuria.
The trial was dealt with by the court in terms of the provisions of the Combating of Rape Act of 2000, which carries long custodial sentences upon conviction.
As a result, Rooinasie was sentenced to a custodial term of 120 years of which half of the sentence was suspended for a period of five years on condition that he is not convicted of any offence of rape committed during the period of suspension.
The convict convinced victims to help him with the carrying of his apparent pregnant girlfriend’s luggage.
According to the judge, these sexual attacks were brutal and vicious on defenceless young women as they were all never shown the pregnant woman for whom Rooinasie was so desperately asking for help.
“Convict Jan Rooinasie is a real danger to Namibia’s female population and he deserves to be removed from the public for a very long time,” said Siboleka as he sent the victim behind bars.
Evidence presented during trial had it that Rooinasie, armed with a knife and screwdriver, pinned the victims to the ground, strangled them unconscious before they even had the opportunity to see who their assailant was and then raped them.
Mbanga Siyomunji acting on instructions from Legal Aid Centre represented Rooinasie.
Deputy Prosecutor General Karin Esterhuizen appeared for the State.
Rooinasie will serve his prison sentence at the Windhoek Central Correctional Facility.
