KEETMANSHOOP, 27 April – The Keetmanshoop Municipality has started to build toilets at people’s houses in the Ileni informal settlement after public toilets provided earlier were constantly vandalized by the community
The municipality started a project in 2015 to provide public toilets and taps in Ileni which the community vandalized.
Keetmanshoop CEO Desmond Basson stated on Tuesday that they again renovated the toilets which were again vandalized.
“We cannot always renovate toilets that the community breaks down,” he said adding they were now taking a different approach.
He said that they had decided to build toilets for the communities at their houses and the project had already started.
He added that they also put in solar panels for lights in the toilets last year and the panels only lasted two days before they were stolen. They are busy upgrading the informal settlements for the community.
Community members say they don’t blame the municipality but blame the boys of the area for destroying the toilets.
“We use the bushes when we need a toilet” one said. They stressed that the municipality is really helping them but the young boys are the ones breaking down the community. – Namibia Daily News
