WINDHOEK, 22 DEC – The Namibia Development Trust (NDT) has pledged to walk in the late Petrus Ilonga’s footsteps by mobilising and building grassroots organisations which serve as vehicles that will champion the agenda of the Namibian people.
In a statement released on Thursday, NDT recognised the initiative Ilonga and other prominent human right activists took to form the organisation.
“This was the time the Namibian liberation struggle had intensified and Namibians inside and outside Namibia determined in their efforts and at all the fronts to make Namibia ungovernable under the racist apartheid regime,” the NDT board said.
Ilonga, together with other trade unionists organised under the National Union of Namibian Workers, liberation war activists such as John Pandeni, Benjamin Ulenga and Paul Kalenga registered the organisation on 21 March 1989 just a year before independence.
This enabled Namibia to take up its rightful place among the free nations of the world, the board said.
“NDT was formed also to prepare Namibians for an independent Namibia. It was the time people started talking about self-reliance and about doing things for oneself,” the statement said.
The current board of trustees, management and staff of NDT in the statement expressed profound gratitude to Ilonga as a founding trustee in forming the organisation.
“We rest assured that we are standing on the shoulders of one of the finest giants the Namibian society has ever produced,” NDT said in further praising Ilonga.
The former deputy minister of defence died on 11 December 2018 after a long illness and will be buried on Saturday at Heroes’ Acre.
“May the Ilonga family and the entire extended family and the Namibian nation at large, find God’s strength to continue their march towards a just society in Namibia,” NDT expressed. – NAMPA
