GIPF computer theft trial postponed to mid-July

WINDHOEK, 03 JUL  – The trial of a former security guard who allegedly stole nine desktop computers and one laptop from the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF)’s offices in May 2011, was on Tuesday postponed to mid-July due to the unavailability of the magistrate.
The continuation of the trial was scheduled to proceed before Windhoek Magistrate Celma Amadhila on Tuesday, but could not go ahead because the presiding magistrate is reportedly on sick leave at the moment.
The case was postponed to 17 July 2018.
The theft suspect, Simeon Thomas Amulungu, 39, appeared before Windhoek Magistrate Vanessa Stanley.
Senior Public Prosecutor Rowan Van Wyk is appearing for the State, while Windhoek-based defence lawyer Werner Kaniita is defending the accused.
Amulungu faces charges of housebreaking with intent to steal, theft, as well as the possession of suspected stolen properties.
He is free on bail of N.dollars 2 000, which was also extended until his next court appearance.
According to a summary of substantial facts contained in the charge sheet, other security guards at the GIPF offices during May 2011 reported the theft of the computers to the police and Amulungu was then arrested after police officers on patrol allegedly spotted him with the equipment in question.
It is alleged that surveillance cameras at the GIPF offices showed the accused entering the building.
The value of the computers was estimated at N.dollars 40 000.
