Family of four escape shackfire at Otjiwarongo

OTJIWARONGO, 31 AUG – A man and his three children at Otjiwarongo escaped a burning shack where all their property and personal documents were destroyed in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The incident happened at the periphery of the Ombili informal settlement at the town.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha said it is alleged the fire started after the man tried to warm a meal on firewood inside the shack for one of his children who cried of hunger around 03h00.
“He allegedly fell asleep and the pot burned, and they were only awoken by flames of fire that was about to engulf their shack,” said Mbeha.
A neighbour of the family, Joseph Simon at the scene told Nampa his neighbour and his two boys and girl were still in shock after the incident.
“The flames were very strong and destroyed everything. My neighbour told me they were terrified. They woke up to the flames and lost everything in the blaze,” said Simon.
Police investigations in the matter continue.
