WINDHOEK, 30 SEP – Super bantamweight boxer Paulus ‘El Jesus’ Ambunda was on Saturday crowned world champion for the third time after beating Muhamad Ridhwan of Singapore.
The 38-year-old Namibian boxer reclaimed his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Super Bantamweight title which he lost on 11 November 2016 in Windhoek, when beaten by Mexican boxer Moises Flores during a unification fight for the IBO and World Boxing Association World Super Bantamweight titles.
Ambunda, who first became a world champion in March 2013 when he beat Panya Uthok for the World Boxing Organisation World Bantamweight title, was on Saturday crowned an IBO world champion for the second time in his career.
The former double world champion who dedicated the fight to his parents celebrating their birthdays on the same day as his fight, put up a strong showing to clinch the super bantamweight category (up to 55 kilogrammes) IBO world title by a split decision.
Both Ambunda and Ridhwan lasted the full 12 rounds, but it was the Namibian who edged in the contest getting the judges’ score of 115-113, 112-115, 116-111.
With this win, Ambunda becomes the first Namibian to win a boxing world title at the age of 38.
