NFA exco member seeks vote of no confidence in Mbidi

WINDHOEK, 05 APR  – A Namibia Football Association (NFA) Executive Committee (exco) member is seeking support from his peers to pass a vote of no confidence in NFA President Frans Mbidi.
This exco member, known to Nampa, asked that discussions on the matter take place as soon as this Saturday when an ordinary meeting was already scheduled for Omuthiya.
The leaked letter to his fellow exco members claims Mbidi has violated the association’s constitution, which states the exco shall meet at least four times a year. However, last year it is on record that the committee only met thrice, according to the letter’s author.
He further alleged that the president has continued to act with “impunity and total disregard” of the exco regarding the matter of the secretary-general (SG), when in fact it is the exco that should appoint or dismiss the SG.
“The president intentionally, despite calls from his fellow executive committee members, failed to call a constitutionally obligatory meeting only to deny the executive committee the opportunity to discuss the secretary-general’s contract before its expiry,” the letter reads.
It is further alleged that Mbidi is unfit to run the NFA after he failed an International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) integrity check which is a pre-requisite for elections onto any Fifa organ.
“If the NFA president is unfit to run for Fifa, why should he be fit to run the NFA,” asked the author.
Mbidi had intentions to run for the then vacant Fifa Council seat last year at the Fifa Congress in Bahrain.
Several other alleged transgressions by Mbidi are listed in the letter, such as Mbidi unilaterally upgrading his economy airplane ticket to Canada for a Fifa symposium in 2015 from N.dollars 18 000 to a N.dollars 90 000 business class ticket at NFA cost.
“An institution as poor as ours cannot afford to fly people in business class as that will lead to serious financial difficulty. This is so if you take into consideration that each NFA regional league use N.dollars 123 000 to complete their league season,” reads the letter.
It is also alleged that Mbidi used NFA resources to campaign for Fifa and Confederation of African Football (CAF) positions.
Mbidi is further accused of benefiting double allowances from CAF and Fifa projects, while also claiming allowances from the NFA.
The author admitted to issuing the letter but refused to comment on it.
