WINDHOEK, 15 AUG – Community members that are benefiting from the Food Bank programme, especially in urban areas, should not just rely on the programme alone but look for other means as well.
This was said by Director of the Poverty Eradication Programme and Coordination in the Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, Niita Iipinge on Tuesday.
She was speaking at a debate on whether urbanisation is an opportunity and a tool for development in Namibia, held here by the Multidisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Namibia.
She explained that data provided by the Namibian Statistics Agency projected that in 2041, 67 per cent of the population will live in urban areas. This, compared to 47 per cent in 2016, will make it difficult for the programme to cater for everyone.
“As a ministry, we are looking for other possibilities to sustain the food bank programme, especially in urban gardening to supplement the programme, instead of just buying groceries in Shoprite,” Iipinge said.
She also encouraged beneficiary communities to come forward with ideas regarding other means of survival.
At the same occasion, Manager of Human Settlement at the City of Windhoek, Faniel Maanda said that urbanisation is associated with industrialisation.
“Many find themselves in worse conditions compared to their previous living conditions, after moving to the city with the hope of better living conditions,” noted Maanda.
