JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 30 — At least eight people were killed Thursday morning in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on a highway in South Africa’s Free State Province, authorities said.
The crash occurred on the N3 highway near Swinburne, along the border between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, according to the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), which operates and maintains the N3 Toll Road.
Siboniso Duma, a member of the Executive Council for Transport and Human Settlements in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, said six others were injured and taken to nearby health centers.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. The N3TC said recovery operations were ongoing, with both affected lanes closed and motorists advised to use alternative routes.
The crash came a day after another road accident in Johannesburg left seven people dead. South Africa records about 14,000 road deaths each year, with accidents peaking during the April and December holiday seasons when roads are busiest.(Xinhua)
