Preparations for Heroes’ Day commemoration going well: Ausiku

RUNDU, 09 JUL – Preparations for the commemoration of Heroes Day at Nkurenkuru on 26 August are progressing well, Kavango West Governor Sirkka Ausiku has said.
The governor, in an interview with Nampa on Friday, said the day will be commemorated on the Sunday.
She said Kavango West is looking forward to hosting the commemoration.
“We do not have a sports stadium yet, so the preparatory committee is looking at holding the event on a plot the Nkurenkuru Town Council has allocated to the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service for the construction of a sports stadium and a multipurpose centre,” she said.
The other possible venue the committee is looking at is the current Regional Government Office Park site.
Ausiku further said the two sites are in the same vicinity and the technical subcommittees will assess both and advise the preparatory committee accordingly.
Asked if there is enough accommodation at Nkurenkuru and its surroundings to accommodate visitors, the governor said although accommodation facilities are few in the region, they are preparing to make visitors’ stay memorable.
“Visitors who can’t find accommodation in Nkurenkuru can stay in neighbouring towns like Rundu in Kavango East, Tsumeb in Oshikoto and Okongo in the Ohangwena Region,” she said.
Heroes’ Day honours the contributions and sacrifices made by Namibian heroes and heroines, some of who are still alive, towards Namibia’s independence from South Africa. The war for self-rule began on 26 August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe in the Omusati Region.
