Nine killed, 2 missing in western Rwanda due to heavy downpour

KIGALI, April 30 — Nine people were killed and two others were missing in western Rwanda on Monday morning due to a heavy downpour as rains continue to wreak havoc in the east African country, a local official said.
The victims were killed when their houses collapsed and buried them under debris in three different sectors in Ngororero district due to the rain starting at about 4 p.m. on Sunday local time until Monday monring, district mayor Godfrey Ndayambaje told the media.
The dead includes eight children, said the mayor. Two other residents are still missing after a landslide on their houses.
The search is still on for the two missing residents, he said.
From March to April 27, disasters triggered by heavy rains killed 95 people while 195 were injured in different parts of the country, statistics released by the ministry of disaster management shows.
At least 4,560 hectares of plantations were destroyed, 370 houses were ruined while 700 domestic animals were killed during the same period, according to the statistics.
The ministry said the main disasters that caused deaths were lightning and landslides. – XINHUA
