Windhoek, Sept. 9 – Brazil has made a commitment to enhance food access in Namibia, a nation gaining prominence in the global oil and gas industry. This announcement comes shortly after international media reports started comparing Namibia to the “new Guyana” due to its recent significant oil discoveries.
The Brazilian government has generously donated US$120,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to address hunger and malnutrition in five regions of Namibia. These funds will be allocated to provide essential food aid to vulnerable communities, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under the age of five.
The WFP has warmly welcomed Brazil’s donation, recognizing it as a “significant contribution” to the battle against hunger in Namibia. The agency highlights that these funds will play a crucial role in ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to the necessary sustenance for their well-being and growth.
Brazil’s donation reflects the increasing international interest in Namibia’s burgeoning oil and gas sector. In recent years, Namibia has made substantial oil discoveries, particularly in the Kavango-Zambezi basin, which is estimated to hold billions of barrels of oil.
The development of Namibia’s oil and gas sector is poised to have a profound impact on the nation’s economy. The government has outlined plans to utilize the revenue generated from these resources to invest in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Brazil’s contribution serves as a valuable boost to Namibia as it confronts the challenges of food insecurity and endeavours to achieve economic development. These funds will not only ensure food security for vulnerable populations but also support the country’s long-term development objectives.
In addition to Brazil’s donation, Namibia has garnered support from various countries and organizations. The United States has pledged US$10 million in food assistance, and the European Union has announced a €10 million grant to assist in the development of Namibia’s oil and gas sector.
This international support underscores the global confidence in Namibia’s future. Namibia is strategically positioned to emerge as a significant player in the global oil and gas industry, with the sector’s growth anticipated to positively impact both the nation’s economy and its citizens. – Namibia Daily News
