MAPUTO, May 29 (Xinhua) — The national electricity company of Mozambique EDM announced on Wednesday that it is selling 70 megawatts of power to Botswana under a five-month contract, starting from May to September.
The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) needs to pay 5 million U.S. dollars per month for the 70 megawatts it buys, according to the announcement.
“There is also a request to extend the energy supply agreement from April 2020 for two years, with an increase of 150 megawatts,” said Aderito de Sousa, the EDM’s director of system operations and markets.
Sousa revealed that BPC also plans to rehabilitate its power plants while waiting for the second agreement in 2022.
The company EDM had exported electricity to Botswana from 2014 to mid-2017, when the Botswana energy deficit was resolved.
“Exports to Botswana will not affect EDM’s commitments to Mozambican customers. Energy will be drawn from available capacity,” Sousa said, adding that there is a surplus that will enable EDM to meet international demands without compromising domestic supply.
Mozambique is the main power supplier in the region, with customers including South Africa (the largest), Malawi, Zimbabwe and Lesoth – XINHUA
