GABORONE, 11 DEC – Namibian swimmer Corne le Roux won Namibia’s third medal on Sunday afternoon at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five, Under-20 Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana.
Le Roux finished third in the 200-metre (m) butterfly and won a bronze, making it the second medal for Namibia swimmers after three days.
Female swimmers, Heleni Stergiadis, Tiana Esslinger, Ju-Ane Oberholzer and Zune Weber won a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay also on Sunday, while judo athlete Juan Johnson was the first athlete to win a medal for Namibia when he got a bronze in the 91+ kilogramme men’s event on Saturday.
South Africa’s Ethan du Preez bettered his record-breaking performance from the morning heats session from 2:02.26 to 2:01.17 in the men’s category for a gold while his fellow South African Ruan Breytenbach finished with the silver in 2:05.62 and Le Roux clocked a time of 2:14.39.
Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe are also taking part in the AUSC Region Five U20 Youth Games, which ends on 16 December.
The Namibian team is competing in football (men and women), track and field, boxing, netball, swimming, basketball, judo, volleyball (men and women) and tennis. – NAMPA
