SWAKOPMUND, Mar. 26 – The Japanese fishing vessel that ran aground at Mile 108 north of Henties Bay last Thursday, is yet to be salvaged.
Updating Nampa about the situation on Monday, Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Julius Ngwedha said a more powerful tugboat on its way from South Africa will tow the Fukuseki Maru out into deeper waters.
Ngwedha said the vessel was on its way from Angola to the Port of Walvis Bay when it ran aground and hit a rock.
“The impact of the rock damaged the tank that carried 120 metric tonnes of marine diesel. The diesel started leaking into the sea, but urgent response stopped the leak,” he said.
He said the leak was minimal and it is not expected to harm the environment.
Ngwedha said there were 24 crew members on board of which 11 have already returned to their respective countries. Thirteen other crew members are taking care of the vessel.
Once successfully salvaged, the vessel will proceed to the port where it will be inspected to determine if it is safe for it to proceed to its destination.
“We are monitoring the situation to ensure that no extensive damage to the ship and diesel tank occurs. If it does happen, we will be in a position to handle it safely and keep it under control,” said Ngwedha.
He said questions regarding the legality of the vessel in Namibian waters are being investigated and a report will be issued in due course.
