Oshakati, July 19 – In a shocking incident, a 60-year-old cattle farmer from Omakange in the Kunene Region narrowly escaped losing N$400,000 to a self-proclaimed Kenyan-born herbalist. The incident unfolded this afternoon in Oshakati, leaving the farmer in a state of distress.
According to reports, the pensioner approached the 40-year-old herbalist seeking assistance after losing eight cattle and hoping to recover them. Eager to solve his predicament, the farmer paid a deposit of N$16,500 to the popular herbalist. However, the situation took an alarming turn when he was instructed to gather an additional N$400,000, allegedly claiming that his life was in danger.
Determined to retrieve his lost cattle and ensure his safety, the farmer went to withdraw the requested funds. Fortunately, the bank, suspecting fraudulent activity, promptly informed the police, who quickly intervened. Accompanied by law enforcement, the farmer was escorted to the house of the self-proclaimed herbalist, Dr. Andrew.
The farmer changed his mind after many discussions and perhaps recognizing the seriousness of the situation. The herbalist gave the farmer all of his money back with the help of the police, assuring his financial recovery.
The incident serves as a warning of the frequency of scams that prey on vulnerable people looking for assistance or solutions. It emphasizes how important it is to use caution and vigilance when interacting with those who claim to have unusual skills or cures.
To save others from becoming victims of the same frauds, law enforcement authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious contacts or actions. Unquestionably, the farmer was spared significant financial damage in this situation due to the quick action taken by the bank and the authorities. ~Namibia Daily News
