Windhoek, 17 May 2024 – The family of a young man assaulted by a police officer at Wanaheda Police Station is seeking legal assistance to ensure the officer faces justice. The assault occurred as the young man was walking home at night after an outing with friends.
A family member of the victim reported that the officer brought the young man to the station and began beating him. Realizing the extent of the injuries, including fractures to both sides of his mandible, the officer allegedly released the victim, perhaps hoping he would die in the streets, allowing the assault to be blamed on thieves.
Despite opening a case against the officer at Wanaheda Police Station, the family is deeply concerned. The victim, who was discharged from Katutura Hospital, is now unable to eat due to his injuries, and the family fears for his life.
“We believe our brother might not be the only one to suffer like this at the hands of the police. It is unfair and wrong; the police are supposed to protect us, not cause harm,” said a family member.
In response to the case, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed that the case is registered under CR 361/05/2024 for Assault GBH at Wanaheda Police Station. An investigation is currently being conducted by the Police Conduct Investigation Sub-Division.- Namibia Daily News
