KEETMANSHOOP, 31 MAY – //Kharas Governor Lucia Basson on Thursday delivered her third State of the Region Address at Keetmanshoop, highlighting various development activities in the constituencies, settlements, towns and at regional level in the 2017/18 financial year.
More than 70 people from various towns in the region gathered at the Moth Hall in Westdene to listen to her address.
Basson, amongst others, mentioned the completion of the furniture manufacturing plant and garment factory in Tseiblaagte in Keetmanshoop, established by the Namibia Development Corporation.
She also highlighted the progress in eliminating the bucket toilet system within the region as a huge achievement.
The governor said Government prioritised access to decent sanitation and ablution under the Harambee Prosperity Plan’s Social Progression pillar as a matter of human dignity.
“Government has embarked on the elimination of the bucket system as the lack of access to proper sanitation and means of good hygiene is an assault against human dignity.”
Basson said 496 toilets were completed and only 25 remain to be finalised at Koës this year.
“I am confidently informing you that we are going to eradicate bucket toilets in the //Kharas Region during this financial year, all things being equal,” she said.
As for the Mass Housing Programme, houses planned under the financial year under review were completed in Keetmanshoop, Karasburg, Oranjemund and Lüderitz.
Basson further mentioned that mobile telecommunication connection towers will be erected for a number of areas, including Blouwes, the Neckartal Reservoir and Snyfontein before the end of this year.
