WINDHOEK, 03 JUL – An investigation will be conducted into whether the police were negligent in reacting to the case of an 18-year-old man who allegedly killed five members of his family at Rundu over the weekend.
This is according to Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Inspector-General, Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, who was responding to information circulating on social media alleging that there were no police vehicles available when the sister of the accused reported her brother to the police.
Messages circulating on social media said she informed the police that he had assaulted her after he asked for money, which was not given to him. The officers on duty reportedly said there is no transport available.
“I am aware of the allegations as claimed on social media and I have instructed that an investigation be launched to determine if there is any kind of negligence from the side of the police,” Ndeitunga told Nampa.
NamPol spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi in a media statement on Monday said the incident occurred between 23h00 on Saturday and 05h30 on Sunday at the Ndama informal settlement.
She said it is alleged that the suspect, who is reportedly mentally ill and a suspected drug user, assaulted his grandmother, mother and three nephews with a stick after he became agitated because his sister reported him to the police.
The bodies of the five deceased were discovered by a relative Sunday morning.
