Windhoek, 12 September | | A devastating fire engulfed Block 5 of Aussenkehr on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at around 16:00, destroying approximately 72 reed houses.
According to a police report, the fire is believed to have started in one of the reed houses, quickly spreading to surrounding homes due to strong winds. The blaze resulted in significant losses for the affected community members, who lost essential belongings such as documents, food, clothing, blankets, and mattresses. Many residents are now stranded and without shelter.
The fire was eventually brought under control through the combined efforts of community members, police officers, and water tanks provided by local grape companies. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were reported, though the exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. – Namibia Daily News
