WINDHOEK, Mar. 22 – Deputy Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi has pointed out that the current generation of youth is referred a lost generation, characterized by sharing of happy pictures as a smokescreen to mask sad lives.
Nekundi was Speaking at Academia Secondary School during the annual independence celebrations titled: “The Role of the Youth in Independent Namibia,” Nekundi.
“As things stand, we are referred to as a lost generation. The generation of Instagram (happy pictures but totally sad lives). So many of our fellow young people post pictures for likes and in the evening you sadly learn that that same person took their own life.”
He added: “We are the generation of Tik Tok videos and senseless mottos like ‘any little money I get is for my enjoyment, don’t worry about my future.’
“We are the generation of hubbly bubbly, drugs and alcohol. We are the generation of learners who come to school each day and come to bunk classes. Ours is the generation of zero respect for parents at home not to talk about teachers, community leaders or even churches for that matter!
Nekundi shed light on how the founding fathers had a vision for the future and disagreed that the current situation did not reflect it.
“Surely this is not the vision our founding fathers had in mind for us when they made the ultimate sacrifice of sacrificing their lives. Surely we owe it to ourselves to stand up and be different in a world where more and more people are trying to be like someone else. In helping you to answer what is our generational mission, I stand here to say without any fear, it is to go against any of the things mentioned that makes us referred to as a lost generation.”
He issued a clarion call for youth to be cognizant of responsibilities that they hold and that it was part of their responsibility to shape and build a nation of pride.
“As citizens of this beautiful country, we must be cognizant that we hold responsibilities, responsibilities to be responsible citizens, a responsibility to build and maintain a nation of pride. One should fulfill our responsibilities by doing simple deeds such as decency towards others. Fulfil our academic tasks in order to become productive citizens. Remember, a responsible citizen is a valuable citizen,” he said. – musa@namibiadailynews.info
