ONGWEDIVA, March 12 – A Facebook account trending with the name of the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Erastus Uutoni is a sham, NamPol spokesperson Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi warned in a statement issued on Monday.
Shikwambi said swindlers are using the minister’s name to solicit funds from unsuspecting people, and she urged the public not to fall victim to the scam.
She added that the information by the scammers is that the minister has nominated beneficiaries of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service developmental program for the youth in any business project in Southern Africa.
In addition, the scam convincingly lures the victim to “pay an urgent administration fee of 270 British Pounds which is over N$ 5000.”
Furthermore, the office of minister was consulted in that regard and the ministry has distanced itself from information, while NamPol has warned the public to be extra cautious whenever they carry out online trading.
The statement further employs the public to authenticate with relevant offices on any information they receive on social media, particularly information requesting for payment.
The warning comes after the police received information from victims of scams after they were contacted on Facebook by a scammer who operates under the Office of the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service.
The public has also be urged to be “wise and shame those scammers.” – NDN Staffer
