Usakos prepared to host Gurirab’s memorial service

USAKOS, 17 JUL – The town of Usakos has expressed readiness to host the memorial service of former Prime Minister, Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab, who died on Saturday.
In an interview with Nampa here on Tuesday, the town’s Mayor, Akser Mwafangeyo said although the news to host the memorial service came to them on short notice, they were glad to have been granted the opportunity.
“We would also like to thank the wife and family for finding it fit to have a memorial service in Usakos in honour of the late Gurirab,” he said.
Mwafangeyo noted that this will give an opportunity to the people of Usakos to mourn and give the late politician the last respects.
He described Gurirab not only as a father figure to the town and its people, but also an advisor.
“Usakos remembers him as one of their own and whenever there was an event here, we always invited him,” Mwafangeyo said, adding that Gurirab was a patron of the town’s museum.
He said the late seasoned diplomat played other roles in the town’s development as well.
The memorial service is set to take place on Wednesday at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Hakhaseb residential area, where the late Gurirab regularly attended church services during his visits to Usakos.
A second memorial service will be held in Windhoek on Friday and he will be accorded a State funeral at Heroes’ Acre on Saturday.
Gurirab is survived by his wife and two sons.
He died at the age of 80 in a private hospital in Windhoek after a short illness.
