SWAKOPMUND, 10 OCT – Community members in Swakopmund planning to build homes have been urged to make use of a brick making machine which is available for them at an industrial area in the Mondesa residential area.
Swakopmund Municipality Acting Chief Executive Officer, Marco Swartz said this during a community meeting held at the town hall on Monday evening.
“The machine has been standing idle since it was acquired over a year ago and no single person has come forth to make use of it,” Swartz noted.
The machine was acquired by the Office of the Erongo Governor, Cleophas Mutjavikua last year, in his quest to address the shortage of houses in Swakopmund.
The machine was obtained from the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency and then donated to the Swakopmund community.
The machine is open for lease at fees ranging from N.dollars 316 a month and N.dollars 948 for a maximum of three months.
In an telephonic interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Namibia Housing Action Group Co-Director, Heinrich Amushila said Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia members could not make use of the machine because they were faced with a shortage of land to build houses on.
He added that this issue has now been solved and land is now available for them.
“Our members have acquired land in Swakopmund as well as in Henties Bay, and we are now definitely looking forward to utilising the brick making machine,” explained Amushila.
