Johannesburg, March 06 – South African radio and television host Mark Pilgrim passed away at the age of 53 after a battle with stage four lung cancer. Lloyd Madurai, the managing director of HOT 102.7FM, confirmed the news of his death in an online statement.
Madurai expressed his sadness in conveying the news and described Pilgrim as a hero, brother, and much-loved radio broadcaster. He further wrote on Facebook that the veteran broadcaster passed away peacefully at his home with his fiancée Adrienne by his side.
Pilgrim was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in March 2022, which had spread to his femur, the base of his spine, and lymph nodes by the time he reported it in June. Despite the severity of his diagnosis, the radio host began a YouTube video series called “Mark’s Cancer Adventure – 2022” to document his journey and inspire those dealing with cancer.
In July, Pilgrim reported that his seventh round of chemotherapy had resulted in a considerable reduction in the intensity and size of the tumours. A month later, he underwent radiation therapy that eliminated the tumours in his leg and spine.
However, Pilgrim’s condition worsened in September when his appendix ruptured, causing a series of complications. He underwent multiple surgical operations in October and November to address the collapsed lung, which required weeks of recovery in the intensive care unit.
Despite his recent health struggles, Pilgrim remained a host on Hot 102.7FM from Monday through Saturday until his passing. He is survived by his two daughters, Tayla-Jean and Alyssa, whom he shared with ex-wife Nicole Torres, and his fiancée, Adrienne Watkins.
Pilgrim had previously overcome Stage 3 testicular cancer in 1988, and his resilience and positivity during his recent battle with lung cancer inspired many. He will be remembered as a beloved radio and television personality who brought joy and laughter to many South Africans.
