WINDHOEK, Feb. 15 – The Bank Windhoek National Indoor Hockey League entered its second week over the weekend with games played in Windhoek and Walvis Bay. In the Men’s First League, Saints were full of vigour as they won all of their three fixtures convincingly. They first defeated Sparta 5-3, then went to outplay X-Team 5-0 and overpowered Coastal Raiders with a 3-1 fulltime score.
At the Indoor Sports Hall in Walvis Bay, Gurus played Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) and won 5-1. Windhoek Old Boys Sport Club (WOBSC) made it worse for NUST in their game as they put three goals past them with no reply. Gurus then suffered their first defeat as champions when they faced a stern test from a youthful Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) side who beat and outclassed them with a 7-1 victory.
Saints continued their impressive start in the Men’s Second League. They defeated Coastal Raiders 7-1 and inflicted more pain on X-Team with a 6-3 fulltime score. Gurus took on DTS and gave a good account of themselves but eventually lost 10-3.
Saints also started to cement their dominance in the Women’s First and Second Leagues. They took on Sparta at the coast and won 6-0. Saints went on to win two more games: 6-2 against Raiders and 6-0 against Coastal. Angels also played at the coast over the weekend and lost 2-1 to Sparta. In their second match, the Angels quickly recovered and defeated Coastal 4-1. Thereafter they lost momentum and lost 2-0 at the hands of Raiders.
Windhoek Games in Windhoek saw BDO Wanderers share the spoils with WOBSC. The result was a 3-all draw. In the other game DTS beat United 2-0.
In the Woman’s Second League, Saints won their encounter against Coastal Raiders 1-0, but stumbled in their other match against X-Team. The final score was 3-0.
“The Bank Windhoek Premier League will start next weekend and players who recently participated in the Hockey Indoor World Cup, return to their clubs to give it their all this season,” said Marc Nel, President of the Namibian Hockey Union.
The next games for the First and Second Leagues will take place this coming weekend at Wanderers in Windhoek. – NDN Staffer
