Swakopmund, January 1, 2025 – As Namibians welcome the New Year 2025, His Excellency Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia, delivered a reflective and inspiring address on December 31, 2024, in Swakopmund. His message captured the challenges and achievements of the past year while setting a hopeful vision for the future.
The President began by acknowledging the profound trials of 2024, most notably the untimely passing of H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob, Namibia’s third President, on February 4. This loss marked an unprecedented moment of national mourning and political transition. Dr. Mbumba expressed heartfelt gratitude for the unity and resilience shown by Namibians during this difficult time.
“From our collective grief, we have emerged a stronger and more united nation,” he affirmed, highlighting Namibia’s steadfast identity as the “Land of the Brave.”
The President also addressed the persistent drought that gripped the nation, prompting a state of emergency in May. Under his leadership, the government’s swift response through emergency relief efforts underscored the importance of robust social safety nets in times of crisis.
Amid these challenges, Namibia celebrated significant milestones. The election of the first female President, H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, marked a historic step toward gender inclusivity and leadership renewal. This transition symbolized the closing of one chapter, led by freedom fighters, and the rise of a new generation committed to Namibia’s continued progress.
On the economic front, Namibia demonstrated remarkable resilience. Recovery from the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic was bolstered by robust performance in the mining, oil, and gas industries, alongside burgeoning sectors like tourism. By year’s end, the economy had rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.
Infrastructure development was another highlight, with the government expanding road networks, enhancing access to education and healthcare, and addressing housing shortages through targeted initiatives. Dr. Mbumba expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Growth in the non-mineral economy, including tourism, is expected to gain traction, which augurs well for job creation in 2025 and beyond.”
Namibia’s contributions on the global stage further cemented its role as a committed international partner. As co-chair of the United Nations Summit for the Future, the country played a pivotal role in adopting the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations. These achievements underscored Namibia’s dedication to multilateralism and its resolve to tackle global challenges like climate change and inequality.
Dr. Mbumba also emphasized Namibia’s advocacy for peace in conflict-affected regions, including the Middle East, Sudan, and Ukraine. He reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to justice and diplomatic solutions.
As Namibia approaches its 35th independence anniversary, Dr. Mbumba called on citizens to reflect on their roles in shaping the nation’s destiny. Declaring 2025 as the “Year of Namibia,” he encouraged renewed efforts toward fulfilling the promise of prosperity envisioned at independence.
“Ensure that your hopes and aspirations are part of your contribution to a better Namibia in 2025,” he urged.
