ONGWEDIVA, 16 Apr – The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region arrested a man and woman after they were allegedly found fishing at the town’s oxidation ponds on Sunday.
The incident was confirmed by the town’s spokesperson, Jackson Muma on Sunday, who also confirmed that two other suspects fled the scene and are still at large.
“The two have been arrested for trespassing and vandalising public property,” Muma stated, adding that suspects forced entry into the ponds by cutting the fence around them.
According to Muma, members of the public tipped off the council that certain individuals were fishing in the ponds and the council in turn informed and asked NamPol to apprehend them.
Muma pointed out that also last year people vandalised the walls of the same ponds for the water to flow into the nearby Oshana/pan for them to be able to catch the fish.
The culprits of last year, Muma said, successfully fled the scene and could not be arrested. It is believed that certain individuals catch the fish from oxidation ponds at Ongwediva and Oshakati and further sell them to innocent people in and around the area.
“We once again strongly urge the public to desist unauthorised entry into the sewerage ponds for fishing, grazing and shooting of birds,” Muma stated.
He, at the same time, warned that unauthorised entry into the said ponds is strictly prohibited and any person, who will be found violating such rule, will be brought to book.
Muma indicated that more details concerning the arrest of the culprits on Sunday will follow once NamPol has properly charged them.
